An astronaut is a person who travels into space. The first astronaut was Yuri Gagarin, from the Soviet Union (Russia) in 1961. The first American astronaut was Alan Shepard, also in 1961. John Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth, in 1962. Neil Armstrong was the first person on the moon, in 1969.
