Lopez Island is the third largest of the San Juan Islands of Washington. The ferries go there from the town of Anacortes. Lopez is known as "The Friendly Isle," and drivers and cyclists traditionally wave at each other. The Powells have a house on Lopez, on Rowboat Cove near Shark Reef.
